Senior Air Force officials said Wednesday that the Air Force will face a shortage of 700 fighter pilots by the end of 2016.
That shortfall is estimated to grow to 1,000 by 2022.
Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein told CNN that they are working on incentive plans, such as increased retention bonuses, to compete with commercial airlines.
Currently, they offer a bonus of $25,000 per year to stay up to nine years.
