A Punta Gorda librarian playing the role of a criminal in a scenario designed to show how police officers must react quickly was shot and killed Tuesday night.
The officer, who has not yet been named, was supposed to use blanks, but instead used live ammunition.
Here's police chief Tom Lewis's statement.
I am devastated for everyone involved in this unimaginable event.
Mary Knowlton, 73, was shot several times. The scenario was supposed to show the community how police have to react quickly to decide whether or not to use deadly force.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave, according to The (Fort Myers) News-Press.
The department has run this scenario for two years with no injuries.
