Meet the newest addition to the Burger King menu: the "Whopperito."
Burger King will roll out the burrito/burger hybrid nationwide Monday now that some regional tests have been completed, USA Today reports.
The "Whopperito," which is just $2.99, may very well be meant to undercut Chipotle Mexican Grill and its more expensive $9 burritos. Chipotle's market share is still recovering from multiple food-borne illness outbreaks, according to Bloomberg.
Whopper in a tortilla
"It's certainly one of the first times that we've tapped into the Tex-Mex category," Alex Macedo, North American president at Burger King, told Bloomberg. "It's one of the fastest-growing categories -- consumers like the freshness of it, they like the mix of flavors."
The "Whopperito" is essentially a traditional Whopper rolled up inside a tortilla.
Burger King replaced the Whopper's mayonnaise with queso for the "Whopperito."
Mac 'n' Cheetos?
This isn't the first menu item that's left Burger King fans scratching their heads this year. In February, the fast-food chain began offering hot dogs. Last month, BK released the monstrosity known as "Mac 'n' Cheetos."
