President Obama's 55th birthday: Through the years

Today, a certain commander in chief has a little more gray hair, and maybe an even bigger smile than usual.

We're talking, of course, about President Barack Obama, who turns 55 today.

The president has a lot to grin about this month -- his approval ratings rose to 54 percent after last week's Democratic convention. That's the highest rating he's had in his entire second term in office. His approval ratings rank on par with those of Ronald Reagan in 1988 when he finished his second term.

Obama was 47 when he took office in January of 2009.

First lady Michelle Obama is said to have planned a small party of close friends and family, many from his hometown of Chicago.

Fans and supporters of the president quickly took to Twitter to wish him well on his special day.
