The Olympics actually start today, despite opening ceremonies on Friday

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games takes place this Friday night, but some athletes are already gunning for gold.

Women's soccer matches are the first events on the schedule. The U.S. women's national team are defending gold medalists and are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. EST against New Zealand.

Male gymnasts also start practice on Wednesday, giving athletes a chance to try out on the actual equipment.
