SCOTUS blocks transgender bathroom ruling

Virginia schools can block a transgender male student from using the boys' bathroom based on a Supreme Court ruling Wednesday.

In a 5-3 decision, the Supreme Court put on hold a lower court order that made Gloucester County School Board allow Gavin Grimm to use the boys' bathroom in a Virginia public school this fall.

The ruling is a victory for the school board and a loss for  Grimm, the transgender student who won at the lower court level to use the male restroom.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights, called Wednesday's ruling "disappointing" but were encouraged that it was temporary.
