Prosecutors announced Thursday that the murder charge against Ingmar Guandique for the killing of Chandra Levy has been dropped, according to the Washington Post.
Levy, a 24-year-old intern with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, went missing on May 1, 2001.
Her remains were found in Rock Creek Park in 2002 and Guandique, a man who had previously pleaded guilty to attacking another woman in the park, was charged with her murder.
Levy's case initially gained national attention because authorities first investigated former California congressman Gary A. Condit as a suspect because Levy had an affair with him.
Condit, however, was later ruled out as a suspect.
Guandique, who is an undocumented immigrant, will be handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement once released.
