Chinese space rocket falls to Earth, lights up Western U.S. skies

July 27th, 2016 Fireball "Meteor" Space Junk CZ-7 Re-entry Over California (Warning: Profanity)

Aliens? UFO? That's what some wondered when a Chinese rocket re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and lit up the night sky as it burned up over the Western United States.

The Chinese CZ-7 re-entered the atmosphere Wednesday night, U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman Julie Ziegenhorn confirmed.

That's when people in Nevada, Utah and California took to social media to report a fireball streaking across the sky.

Further east in Utah, Matt Holt was outside a public library in Provo with a large group playing Pokémon Go when he noticed a bright, colorful flash of light. Soon, others spotted it too.

"I didn't know what I was seeing because I've never seen space debris," Holt told KOMO TV.
