A couple from Marion, Ohio is in jail, charged with third-degree child neglect.
The Marion Police Department arrested Alan Kearns, 33, and Kassandra Kearns, 32, after their 18-month-old baby girl overdosed on Percocet twice within just 5 days.
Police spokesman Major Jay McDonald says that Kassandra Kearns claimed the first overdose on July 19th was an accident.
"She said the baby took the pills from her purse."
Online, people were quick to speak out against the parents.
Police were called to Marion General Hospital just five days later on the 24th, when the baby was brought in for another Percocet overdose.
"They didn't offer an explanation of what happened the second time," said McDonald.
He says doctors had to give the baby the powerful antidote Narcan to save her life.
"It's just unbelievable. In my 23 years of law enforcement I have never seen this. It's shocking," he added.
Neighbors told ABC6\FOX28 that the Kearns are a quiet family and have never caused trouble on their street. They would often see the Kearns' children playing in the yard.
They also talked about how the Kearns regularly post pictures and comments on Facebook, sharing how much they love their little girl and their young son.
"I feel for all of them, especially the little girl," said next door neighbor Jason Ellis.
Marion County Children's Services is also involved. For now, the couple's son is staying with family.
