ISIS claims responsibility for attack on French church, execution of priest during Mass

0

Two attackers, described as "soldiers" of ISIS, took a French church hostage and slit the throat of the priest before police killed them Tuesday.

The two men took five people hostage, including slain priest Jacques Hamel, in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during a Mass, CNN reports. One of the hostages was seriously wounded.

ISIS news agency Amaq and French President Fran├žois Hollande both claim the men had pledged allegiance to ISIS.

The church where the hostage situation took place was on an ISIS hit list, The Sun reports.

A Vatican spokesman said Pope Francis was shaken by "the pain and horror of this absurd violence."

Hollande said France needed to use "all means" against the Islamic State. Attacks in Europe, including an attack that killed 84 people in France on Bastille Day, have killed and injured dozens in recent weeks.

More recently, a suicide bomber outside a German music festival had pledged himself to ISIS.

Here's a scene from the aftermath.
