A Tesla pickup truck? It's all part of the 'Master Plan, Part Deux'

0

When you think Tesla, do you think pickup trucks? The company is best known for its sleek, energy-efficient electric sedans, but that might be about to change.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the company's "Master Plan, Part Deux," which is ambitious, to say the least.

Musk said the ambition was always to start off with small electric cars and, if successful, use the money to fund cheaper medium-size cars, and then bigger cars.

Musk said he was partly defending against accusations that Tesla only made "cars for rich people." But he doesn't want to stop at mid-size cars. He said the Tesla Model 3 will be a compact SUV, and a "new kind of pickup truck" is coming.

The company also plans to make a Tesla semi truck (with the oh-so-creative name of Tesla Semi) and Tesla buses.

Musk addressed calls to disable Tesla's "Autopilot" system after a high-profile accident killed a driver in Florida using the technology, saying that made as much sense as disabling autopilot systems in planes.

Even if these ideas seem crazy, it's not as much of a moonshot as Musk saying we're all probably in a video game right now. So, there's that.

The plan also touched on Musk's idea of a car that can "make money for you when you aren't using it" imagine an Uber that you don't even have to drive, or even sit in, to make money.

There was no timetable for most of the "Part Deux" plan except the Model 3, which is expected in 2018.
