CBD stores buzzing about possible hemp legalization

SAN ANTONIO (CIRCA via KABB) — Health and wellness stores selling CBD products are optimistic after the U.S. Senate and House passed the 2018 farm bill this week. Among other things, it legalizes industrial hemp.

Hemp is a type of cannabis plant that contains a chemical called CBD (cannabidiol). It doesn't get the user high, but the people who use it swear by its ability to ease their pain.

But right now, federal law classifies hemp the same way it classifies cocaine, heroin and LSD.

"Now people can come out of the woodwork (that industrial hemp is going to be legalized)."

"It was hard for me to find someone that would rent (retail space) to me," said Angela Salas of Key to Life Botanicals, which opened its store in northwest San Antonio in September. "It was hard for me to find insurance for my business."

The new farm bill removes industrial hemp from the federal list of controlled substances.

"Now people can come out of the woodwork," Salas said. "So I'm hoping that stigma will come down, and people can come and see for themselves."

Now that it’s passed Congress, the bipartisan bill is headed for President Trump's desk, and he's expected to sign it into law by the end of the week.
